Global Alliance calls for 'Responsible Communication' to be the 18th UN SDG
“The United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity aim to empower people to demand their rights. At a time when billions of people are exposed to false narratives, distortions and lies, these principles lay out a clear path forward, firmly rooted in human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and opinion.”
The principles provide a framework for coordinated international action to make information spaces safer and more humane, something the UN sees as one of the most urgent tasks of our time. The Global Principles for Information Integrity can be read here.
Misinformation, disinformation, hate speech and other risks to the information ecosystem are fuelling conflict, threatening democracy and human rights, and undermining public health and climate action.
Relatedly, the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management is calling for 'Responsible Communication' to become the 18th UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
Last week, Justin Green, President & CEO of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, and Life Fellow PRII, met Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Global Communications of the United Nations (pictured) to discuss GA's responsible communication.
The Global Alliance delegation also included Philip T. Bonaventura, Treasurer of the Global Alliance, Bonnie Caver, Board Member of the Global Alliance, Mateus Furlanetto, Chief Administrative Officer of the Global Alliance, and Linda Thomas Brooks, Chief Executive Officer of PRSA – Public Relations Society of America.
