IBI appeal to Government to support news and current affairs on independent radio
This coverage spanned from polling day to the last count in local, European, and mayoral elections.
The survey also revealed that 217 individuals, including 167 journalists and 50 production and support staff, were involved in reporting on the election counts.
On average, these stations dedicated 79% of their News and Current Affairs output to covering the election counts and results, surpassing the figures of RTE Radio for the same areas of output. These independent stations include 34 broadcasters at local, regional, multi-city, and national levels, reaching over 2.5 million listeners daily across Ireland.
However, the survey also revealed concerning findings. Most of the independent radio stations (58%) expressed apprehension about maintaining or replicating the levels of coverage they achieved during the recent elections, including candidate debates and counts, when the forthcoming General Election is called.
Additionally, 94% of the stations were uncertain about their ability to attract or retain news and current affairs staff due to the current funding constraints in the volatile market environment.
These figures provide supporting evidence for the sector's appeal to the Government to provide fair, proportionate, and meaningful support for the core news and current affairs services on independent radio, as these services currently receive zero funding.
